Our Aging Beliefs: Impact

People’s beliefs about aging have a profound impact on their health. It can influence           everything from memory, balance, sensory perception, how well a person walks and recovers from a disabling illness. When aging is seen as a negative event individuals tend to  experience more stress and pain. Which leads them to engage less often in healthy behaviors. On the contrary, when aging is viewed in a positive way, individuals are more likely to stay active, be social, exercise and achieve better health with a stronger will to live. Dr. Levy is a Psychology and Epidemiology professor at Yale University. She has written a book, “The Age Code” and demonstrated through multiple studies that by using positive feedback to aging we can improve health outcomes, such as memory, gait, balance and will to live.

All of us have an extraordinary opportunity to rethink what it means to age. Let’s focus on the positive images of aging, spiritual peace, positive role models, people we know, historical figures or documentaries. Positive images can come from many different sources.
